Bring on Adrenaline!
So the question is: how do good stressors battle the bad ones? It all comes down to the positive power of adrenaline. Apart from its performance-enhancing effects, adrenaline triggers the release of dopamine and endorphins. These two neurotransmitters make us feel good, really good! The first time you try sky diving, you're probably freaking out all the way down. But when you land safely, dopamine floods your brain's pleasure centre giving you a euphoric, fist-pumping high. The next time you jump, you may well still feel all the same physiological stress responses (sweaty palms, pounding heart)but instead of feeling terrified, you will probably feel exhilarated because your brain has already anticipated the thrill of the dopamine reward.

A one-off adrenaline spurt that comes and goes swiftly is a good thing because it charges you with energy and prepares you to mobilize for immediate action.
Whether you're jumping out of an airplane or racing to save someone from a burning house, adrenaline created by a sudden eruption of stress fires a flood of oxygen-rich red blood cells through your body, boosting your immune system and signaling your brain to start releasing pain-killing endorphins.
Unhealthy stress on the other hand is stress that is caused by things like working day and night just to pay your mortgage. It is intense and it drags on and on. That kind of endless grind can cause your adrenal glands to ooze a slow, steady stream of another stress hormone: cortisol. Unlike adrenaline which tends to invade your system in a flash and then dissipate, cortisol often hangs around in your bloodstream like a bad smell driving up your blood pressure, suppressing your immune system, and making you more susceptible to a throng of stress-related ailments including colds, irritable bowel syndrome, migraines and even heart disease and stroke.
The more times you leap from that plane, or host a nerve wracking public presentation, or perform karaoke in front of your work mates, the less anxiety you'll feel and the more fun you'll have. That's because your brain is remembering the experience as a positive one, thanks in part the flow of dopamine.
Test your limits. To get real benefit from your exercise challenges, it's not good enough to simply go for a paddle down calm water in your kayak, or take the mountain bike for a spin around the park. The track has to be unpredictable and slightly dangerous. There needs to be a ‘scare factor’ involved. You need to feel that surge of adrenaline when you crest a hill and see the track fall suddenly away.
So regularly put yourself through some daredevil challenges that test you both physically and mentally. Generate that exhilarating ‘whoa’ feeling where your skin tingles, your palms sweat and your heart pounds. The more you do it, the easier you will be able to handle stressful situations in all corners of your life and the happier you will feel.
